Jean Val jean is imprisoned for 19 years for stealing bread to feed his sister's child. After his release, he is mistreated and breaks parole to start a new life. He becomes wealthy and adopts an orphan named Cosette. However, he is pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Val jean can change.
